Sulman ‘How to Adult’ Sessions: How to… DIY Cleaning and Beauty Products

This week the Sulman students learnt all about how to make their own cleaning and beauty products from items found in their kitchen. The session focused on simple, yet effective DIY (or “do it yourself”) methods and the students all enjoyed learning some new, cheap home remedies!

DIY Cleaning Tips

Did you know that white vinegar makes a simple homemade cleaner which is non-toxic, cuts through grime with ease, and naturally deodorises?  Students learnt that simply combining some water and white vinegar can help with the following:

  • Microwave cleaning
  • Pest control
  • Multipurpose cleaning of walls and benches
  • Fabric softener
  • Deodorising clothing and carpets
  • Cleaning cutlery
  • Carpet stain removal
  • Weed killer
  • Coffee and tea stain remover
  • Bathroom mould remover

Students were cautioned to always dilute vinegar with water otherwise they may cause serious damage. They were also instructed never to use vinegar on wooden floors, stone, marble or granite surfaces.

DIY Beauty Tips

Sticking with the trend of the many uses of vinegar, students learnt about the antibacterial benefits of using apple cider vinegar in homemade beauty products. We also explored recipes using a host of other pantry items, such as: olive oil, yoghurt, eggs, avocado, honey and mayonnaise. Student learnt how to make the following DIY beauty home remedies:

  • Skin smoother
  • Face toner
  • Sore throat elixir
  • Hair rinse and dandruff remover
  • Mouthwash
  • Teeth whitener
  • Acne treatment
  • Natural deodorant
  • Dry shampoo
  • Hairspray
  • Hair detangler
  • Hair treatments
  • Facial scrubs
  • Face masks

These DIY remedies came with the warning that vinegar is VERY acidic and can burn skin, damage teeth enamel or make someone unwell if ingested in excess. Students were cautioned never to use any of these products on their face/body without first testing a small patch to ensure personal safety. The remedies were also not recommended for sensitive skin.
