Learning Centre Science: Modelling Atoms

For the past 5 weeks in Science, students have been learning all about Atoms. They have spent a lot of time learning about the composition of atoms and about the changes in atomic theory over time. We studied Democritus, Dalton’s solid sphere model to J.J Thompson’s plum pudding model which included positive and negative charges within atoms, and Rutherford’s discovery of empty space within each minuscule atom.

Students conducted many fun experiments including one where they learnt of the positive and negative charges of atoms through static electricity.

Today in class students made their own atoms which corresponded to their research on an element in the periodic table and they ensured the amount of protons, neutrons and electrons corresponded with the atomic mass of their element.
