Term 1 Week 8 Assembly Report

Week 8 Assembly topic was “How to Develop/Maintain Self-Discipline.”

We learned about what holds us back: temptations to do, or not do things.

How to overcome – Don’t wait until it feels right; do it now.

  • Know that nothing lasts forever
  • Meditation helps: Sit. Close my eyes. Follow my breath.
  • If you are having trouble starting, tell yourself you will just do it for 5 minutes.
  • Schedule breaks.
  • Reward yourself.
  • If you are going to give something a go, Give it 100%.

Here is a short exercise you can do to test/increase your self-control.

  • Hold a lolly in your hand
  • List urge from 1 to 10 to eat it.
  • Take a bite – don’t chew, but suck on it.
  • List urge from 1 to 10 to eat it.
  • After eating the first half, list the urge to eat the second half of the lolly from 1 to 10.

Strategies and Skills for Study, Career and Life

At Walker we have Strategies and Skills for Study and Career and Life folders which we use to gather resources that may be helpful with our study, future jobs and in life. We often gain resources from the fortnightly Walker Assemblies. So far we have gathered resources and useful information on peer pressure, effective communication skills and developing self-discipline. We also use our folders as a display for our Rivendell School Achievement Awards, SDEHS Awards, Sports Awards and Principal’s Awards. When we move on from Walker we take our folder of Awards and Strategies with us.
